Following the success of the famed seven-year showcase FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano where he starred as the justice-seeking Cardo Dalisay, Coco Martin takes on another teleserye on Philippine primetime. Batang Quiapo, the late Fernando Poe, Jr.’s 1986 film, was launched as a television adaptation through its producer Dreamscape Entertainment and Coco’s production outfit CCM Film Productions.

The ongoing soap opera is a retelling and modern rendering of the original, which tells the tale of a pickpocket kingpin, Baldo (Fernando Poe, Jr.), who promised to live a decent life after serving time in prison. The action series’ titular protagonist, Tanggol (Coco Martin), is a character remake of the classic movie and was manufactured as a good-natured guy hailed as the “tagapagligtas” and “tagapagtanggol” of his hometown.

On Monday, February 13, 2023, the pilot episode peaked at more than 340,000 concurrent viewers on ABS-CBN Entertainment’s YouTube channel alone, amassing praises for riveting performances of the show’s all-star ensemble. The explosive first night of Batang Quiapo is a favorite talk-of-the-town, too, gaining traction on Twitter and topping the trending topic tally with the hashtag #FPJsBatangQuiapoDay.

With showbiz heavyweights on board, the action-comedy adaptation is bound to bring jitters and jests to the Filipino audience. Top-billed by the one and only box-office talent and action figure Coco Martin, Batang Quiapo is home to high-caliber actors in the country: Lovi Poe, Christopher De Leon, Cherry Pie Picache, John Estrada, Charo Santos, Pen Medina, Irma Adlawan, Lito Lapid, Susan Africa, Tommy Abuel, Alan Paule, Dindo Arroyo, Ping Medina, Mark Lapid, Mercedes Cabral, and many more.
