2022 is wrapping up, but before we wake up to another fabric of time that is the future—2023—we compiled some of the newsmakers who wowed us this year with their accomplishments, awards, and breakthroughs. The many crowns that these talented Filipinos wear are proof that when we flap our wings enough, we can elevate Philippine talent to greater heights.

Arjo Atayde - Bringing its homeland pride and prestige, Arjo Atayde’s thriller series “Cattleya Killer” took center stage as it copped the honor of being the first Filipino production to screen its premiere at MIPCOM Cannes in France last October. Atasha Muhlach - Showbiz royalty Atasha Muhlach was chosen to be part of a Parisian by-invitation ball called “Le Bal des Débutantes.” Spearheaded by Ophélie Renouard, the charity function forwards womanhood, youth, and women. A high-profile party, “Le Bal” was held in France in November with a lean number of young and noble ladies from select families and sectors.@atashamuhlach_

Belle Mariano - Phenomenal actress Belle Mariano, yet again, has proven her worth as a girl wonder in the entertainment landscape. In September, she emerged as a conqueror at the 17th Seoul International Drama Awards in Korea after capturing the Outstanding Asian Star Prize. Out of 175 nominated names in the Asian arena, only five awardees are entitled to the accolade, and the “He's Into Her” leading lady is the Philippine prizewinner.@belle_mariano

Ben&Ben - Filipino folk pop act Ben&Ben performed for a big audience in their latest homecoming concert last December 18. The historic crowd of reportedly 65,000 stood strong as the band serenaded the concertgoers. The show was originally slated to get staged in September as a grand send-off spectacle, but was shelved because of the inclement weather conditions in the country and the issue of wet season safety.@benandbenmusic

Celeste Cortesi - In April, Filipino-Italian fashion model and beauty maven Celeste Cortesi was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2022, overtaking 31 other candidates in the pageant. The beauty queen has bagged two preliminary titles, too, and two special awards: Miss Photogenic and Best in Swimsuit. She is set to represent the Philippines in the 71st edition of Miss Universe in January 2023 in New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States.@celeste_cortesi

Chanty - Former Star Magic artist Chantal Videla has finally found her footing in the Korean music scene. A member of the global girl group Lapillus, she is now a new-generation idol that goes by her new name, Chanty. The half-Filipino global figure, who hails from Argentina, debuted as a K-pop personality in June and was designated as vocalist, visual, and face of the group. She and Lapillus also got featured on a Metro.Style cover in September, as the group toured Manila.@itsmaria.chantal

Charo Santos-Concio - After 31 years of activity on the small screen, “Maalaala Mo Kaya” has finally signed off on December 10. The stories in this Asian drama anthology truly made a footprint in the Filipino mesh, as we have tuned in to the tales of each tearjerker episode. Coco Martin - With its record-smashing run of almost seven years on screen, the action series “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” has faced its sundown and finally concluded its final season last August. Top-billed by the talented Coco Martin, the TV show is also directed by the actor himself together with a set of other directors. Dolly De Leon - Dolly de Leon is a true gem of a talent as she received the Best Supporting Performance recognition on December 11 at the 48th Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards for her role in the Cannes-winning film “Triangle of Sadness.” Winner of the 75th Cannes Film Festival’s highest honor, Palme d’Or, the movie made the Filipina actress famous after a series of non-speaking and nameless characters in Philippine cinema. Eraserheads - The Eraserheads and their timeless, much-celebrated music stays forever and seeps through the fans’ tireless hearts and souls. Helmed by frontman Ely Buendia, the ‘90s band finally reunited for the third time. Hidilyn Diaz - The first official Filipino to have won gold in weightlifting and the Olympics per se, Hidilyn Diaz swept the prize of three golds at the Weightlifting World Championships in Bogota, Colombia on December 8. She tallied a total lift of 207 kg in her latest tournament, beating her Colombian and Mexican counterparts. Being this year’s titleholder was once a dream for the Olympian, as she was chasing this win throughout her career.@hidilyndiaz

Ian Veneracion - Capping his 40-year career in showbiz, veteran star Ian Veneracion bagged the Best Actor award at the recently-wrapped 48th Metro Manila Film Festival for his role in the thriller film “Nanahimik Ang Gabi.” A core achievement for the actor, the title is his latest accolade after being in the entertainment domain for four decades. 2022 was an eventful time for Ian, too, as it allowed his comeback to the action scene through his Amazon Prime Video series “One Good Day.” @ianveneracion1

Inigo Pascual - Musician-actor Inigo Pascual is making waves worldwide as he was cast in a Fox-produced creation, where he had a regular starring role. The multi-generational musical drama “Monarch,” which aired in September, is a series that stars decorated actress Susan Sarandon and American singer-actor Trace Adkins. This music-themed Hollywood show is a huge success for Inigo as he has always aspired to be part of a Tinseltown project. @inigopascual

James Reid - James Reid continues to thrive as a creative as he launches more and more musicians, artists, and actors under his label Careless Music. Upon transitioning from actor to talent manager and chairman of a music label, James has also secured his own share of projects. He collaborated with South Korean boy band The Rose, and was part of one of their tracks. Here, he has had the opportunity to get featured in the group’s album. The Rose’s vocalist Woosung appeared in James’ song “Hold On Tight,” too. Last March, the talented Filipino-Australian star released an updated rendition of his single “Hello,” where he featured South Korean singer Jay B and Taiwanese-American rapper ØZI. In October, James played a riveting performance at Jay B’s Manila concert as well. This 2022, he, too, worked and collaborated with Victoria’s Secret supermodel Kelsey Merritt and filmed a music video with her for 'u & i,' making the two the talk of the town. Janella Salvador - Janella Salvador’s portrayal of the quintessential serpent queen Valentina in the modern-day remake of “Darna” is proof that her acting skills are nothing short of astounding. Jodi Sta. Maria - Seasoned actress Jodi Sta. Maria snagged the Best Actress crown at the 5th Asian Academy Creative Awards on December 8 in Singapore for her iconic character Dr. Jill Ilustre in “The Broken Marriage Vow,” which was adapted from the British series “Doctor Foster.” The first-ever Filipina to have received such recognition, Jodi has also acquired a local following through her famous line 'Papunta pa lang tayo sa exciting part.' Joshua Garcia - Apart from playing one of the protagonists in “Darna,” actor and modern matinee idol Joshua Garcia has proven his caliber as an artist through his awards this 2022. Liza Soberano - Filipino-American actress Liza Soberano was cast as a supporting character in the new feature-length film “Lisa Frankenstein” alongside Hollywood household names Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, and Carla Gugino. Another showcase that Liza has taken on this 2022 is the television show “Not Hocance But Scance” in South Korea last July. Nadine Lustre - A rare gem of her generation, Nadine Lustre surely deserves to be recognized for her 2022 Metro Manila Film Festival entry, the techno-horror thriller film “Deleter.” The movie was in full swing after accumulating seven awards at MMFF’s “Gabi Ng Parangal” on December 27. Lovi Poe - Lovi Poe’s foreign career has come to fruition when she joined the biopic film “The Chelsea Cowboy,” which is based on the life of late British actor and bodyguard John Bindon. Here, she portrayed a singer who hired Bindon for personal security. Alongside the Kapamilya actress are Alex Pettyfer, Charlotte Hope, and Poppy Delevingne. This 2022, Lovi’s first teleserye performance as an ABS-CBN artist was also lauded. SB19 - Pinoy pop boy band SB19 has achieved another important feat as individuals and as a group after making an appearance in FOX5’s “Good Day New York.” The guesting was their first television debut, which happened during the supergroup’s New York City stop while they were on their “WYAT (Where You At)” world tour in the United States.
