Police have identified the suspect in the death of multiple festival-goers at a Filipino community block party in Vancouver, Canada Saturday night.

Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, a Vancouver resident, has been charged with eight counts of second degree murder by the BC Prosecution Service.

“Lo, a Vancouver resident, has appeared in court and remains in custody. The charge assessment is ongoing and further charges are anticipated,” police said.

Eleven people, aged 5 to 65, were killed, and more than two dozen others injured when a man drove an SUV into a crowd of people celebrating the Lapu Lapu Day festival, near Fraser Street on East 43rd Avenue. Lo was arrested at the scene by Vancouver Police after bystanders and witnesses intervened to detain him.

Police chief Steve Rai said the 30-year-old suspect driving a black Audi SUV had a "significant history" of interaction with police and mental health care professionals.

No motive has been confirmed for the Saturday evening attack though terrorism was ruled out by police.

More than 100 police officers joined the investigation, as local officials worked with provincial and federal authorities to provide support services. Messages of condolence and support came from across the globe.

"The community will feel this for a long time," RJ Aquino, chair of the community advocacy group Filipino BC, told reporters. "We want to tell everybody that we're grieving. We want to tell everybody that we see and hear the support from around the world at this point."

The Vancouver government said the Canadian flag will be flown at half-mast at all city buildings until further notice to honor the victims of the horrific incident at the Lapu Lapu Day festival.

“The City extends its deepest condolences to the Filipino community and all those impacted by this tragedy,” it said.
