After over 500 days missing on an Australian island, a miniature dachshund has been found safe and sound, wildlife rescuers said on Friday (April 25).

Valerie the dachshund went missing in November 2023 when her owners took her on a camping trip to Kangaroo Island in South Australia.

The search for Valerie involved over 1,000 hours of searching, across 5,000 kilometers, by volunteers from the not-for-profit charity Kangala Wildlife Rescue, who eventually managed to secure Valerie using a remote trap.

Valerie is expected to remain on the island for at least another week, adjusting to domestic life again, whilst her owners Josh and Georgia travel to the island to pick her up.
