U.S. President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction following a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday (March 5), according to White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt. 

Despite the conversation ending cordially, Trump asserts that consequences must follow the increasing flow of fentanyl across the northern border.

“Canada is allowing that fentanyl to come to the United States. The president sees these numbers. He thinks about the lives that are lost and everybody in this room, I'm sure everybody watching at home, everybody across the country knows someone in our lives who has been killed at the hands of this deadly poison,” Leavitt said.

Trudeau and Trump have had a fractious relationship since Trump's return to the White House in January, as the pair sparred over trade and fentanyl trafficking.

A frustrated Trudeau said Tuesday, after Trump moved ahead with imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports into the United States, that while he thinks Trump is a "smart guy," the tariffs are a "very dumb thing to do."
