MANILA — Law enforcement authorities in Hong Kong have arrested two Filipinos for allegedly trying to withdraw up to $10 billion from an HSBC bank using fake documents.

The two Filipinos have been charged with "uttering forged documents," according to information gathered by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The 38-year-old Filipina suspect has returned to the Philippines after posting bail. However, she needs to return to Hong Kong on March 12, 2025, to face charges.

Meanwhile, the 68-year-old Filipino is "still under arrest" in Hong Kong and showed "clear signs of dementia due to making grandiose claims of wealth," said Eduardo De Vega, DFA undersecretary for migration affairs.

The Philippine Consulate has asked Hong Kong "to grant a full medical examination" for the male suspect, De Vega added.

The official assured that the two Filipinos were provided a Hong Kong public lawyer, but he said the DFA has authorized the Philippine Consulate to hire a private lawyer if necessary.
