Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday demanded that Google reconsider its decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" for U.S. users.

According to Sheinbaum, the change reflects a unilateral decision by the U.S. government, which she argues is not recognized internationally.

The president emphasized that the U.S. can only apply such a name change within its sovereign territory, 22 nautical miles from its coast. Sheinbaum warned that if Google maintains its stance, Mexico might pursue legal action.

The name on Google Maps remains the "Gulf of Mexico" for Mexican users and shows both names for users outside the two countries.
