Surveillance footage from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. shows the moment an American Airlines regional passenger jet collided midair with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near the Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday (January 29) night.

Reuters was able to confirm the location of video as the Lincoln memorial is clearly visible and matches files imagery. The date was confirmed by video timecodes which matched official statements and media reports.

In the footage, two sets of aircraft lights can be seen in the area behind the Lincoln memorial, one moving towards the other until they cross paths and an explosion is seen mid-air.

American Airlines confirmed that 64 people were aboard the jet - 60 passengers and four crew members. Three soldiers were aboard the helicopter, which was on a training flight, a U.S. official said.
