Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the families of victims killed in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in northern India on Wednesday (January 29).

At least seven people were killed and around 10 injured in the stampede at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh state, said an official, as tens of millions gathered to take a holy dip on the most auspicious day of the six-week Hindu festival.

Speaking at a New Delhi rally ahead of next month's assembly elections, Modi said “virtuous souls” were lost in the incident and that he was in constant communication with the Uttar Pradesh government.

The stampede took place in the early hours of Wednesday between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. (1930-2030 GMT Tuesday) near the arena of the ascetics. But there was no confirmation of deaths or injuries from the local government, more than 12 hours after the incident.

The Hindu festival is the world's largest congregation of humanity, attracting some 400 million over its six weeks compared with the Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, which drew 1.8 million last year.
