Moscow started Chinese New Year celebrations on Tuesday (January 28) with traditional lion and dragon dances and the opening of a Chinese-themed market in the centre of the Russian capital.

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova and the Chinese ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui attended the opening ceremony, where Zakharova wished people a happy new year in Mandarin.

The market in central Moscow was decorated with traditional Chinese red lanterns, dragons figures and various symbols celebrating ties between Russia and China.

Both locals and tourists said they enjoyed the festivities. "It is very special," said student from China, Yue Qi, who felt it reminded her of her home.

Despite the fact that the Chinese population in Moscow is relatively small, the interest in China and Chinese culture is on the rise in Russia. It comes at a time when the relationship between Russia and the West has hit its lowest point over the war in Ukraine, referred to by Russia as a "special military operation."
