During a press conference on Monday (January 13) Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman released videos showing a looting incident at an Altadena home, as well as the arrest of a man accused of arson in Azusa, both related to the wildfires affecting California.

Hochman detailed the charges against those arrested. “Mr. (Jose Gerardo) Escobar has been charged with three different arson charges. He is looking at nine years in state prison. This is arson that occurred at Pioneer Park in the city of Azusa,” he said about the man detained by arson, after assuring that one of the men accused of looting will now pass life in prison: Mr. (Martell) Peoples has committed two prior violent or serious crimes. This is his third. As a "three strike", as a potential "three strike" person, he is looking at life in prison,” he said.

At least 24 people have died in the fires that began last Tuesday (January 7). The blazes have reduced whole neighborhoods to smoldering ruins, leaving an apocalyptic landscape. Officials said at least 12,300 structures have been damaged or destroyed.

The return of high winds threatens the hard-won progress that crews have made in containing the fires.
