STORY: Hundred of parishioners displaced by the Palisades Fire attended mass at the St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica, California, on Sunday (January 12), including many like Kathleen McRoskey, 69, whose nearby church burned down.
McRoskey, who attended mass regularly at Corpus Christi for over 40 years, said the church that burnt down held "immeasurable value" to her.
"Our four children attended Corpus Christi school and church," she said. "Our children received all their sacraments at the church, all graduated through the eighth grade."
McRoskey was grateful to the St. Monica church for opening it's doors to those who lost their homes and place of worship.
"It was the first offer of support that would heal us spiritually and physically and emotionally," she said.
Monsignor Liam Kidney, a pastor of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church, said what happened to the Church was 'unbelievable'.
He said there was a mass last Tuesday (January 7) morning and that evening the Corpus Christi Catholic Church burned down from the wildfires.
He added that the message at the Church service in Santa Monica was 'that we're not alone, that all of us are without homes...So together, we're all homeless. And so the homeless idea is now real for all of us."
At least 24 people have died in what California Governor Gavin Newsom said could be the most devastating natural disaster in U.S. history, one that has destroyed thousands of homes and forced 100,000 people to evacuate.
Firefighters raced to contain the frontiers of two Los Angeles wildfires that burned for the sixth straight day on Sunday (January 12), taking advantage of a brief respite in hazardous conditions before high winds were expected to fan the flames anew.
