A witness recalled hearing multiple explosions and seeing smoke plumes on Sunday (Dec. 29) as South Korea's worst ever air disaster unfolded.

Sixty-three-year-old Im Young-hak, who runs a seafood restaurant near the Muan International Airport, heard a loud explosion around 9 a.m., he said, initially assuming it to be a fuel truck exploding.

Jeju Air flight 7C2216, arriving from the Thai capital Bangkok with 175 passengers and six crew on board, was attempting to land shortly after 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) when the airliner belly-landed and veered off the runway, erupting in a fireball as it slammed into a wall. Some 179 were killed, with two survivors pulled from the rear of the aircraft.

The transportation ministry said the control tower issued a bird strike warning before the crash occurred. However, they said more investigations are needed to confirm the cause of the incident, without specifying whether the flight struck any birds.

Im speculated the accident could have been caused by wild geese which he says frequent the area.

Im, who is from the area and has been running his restaurant for 20 years, said he was devastated, adding that he expected the feeling would linger for a long time.
