Pope Francis on Sunday (29 December) prayed for the victims of the "dramatic plane crash" in South Korea.

One hundred and seventy nine people have died and two people were rescued from a plane carrying 181 people that crashed at the Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing rescue authorities.

"My thoughts go to the many families of South Korea who are in mourning today," the pontiff said during his weekly Angelus prayer in St Peter's Square.

He also prayed for "the families suffering from war" in Ukraine, Middle East, Myanmar, Sudan and North Kivu province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
