Philip Fong, AFP South Korea remains a "stable destination" for travelers despite the continued political chaos in the country, its culture ministry said.

In a statement posted Thursday on the Korea Tourism Organization Manila Office's Facebook page, Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said its government was "committed to ensuring the safety and security of all visitors."

"While recent events may have raised, we wish to emphasize that the Republic of Korea remains a stable destination, and the situation in major tourist areas is carefully monitored and managed by the relevant authorities," the ministry said in a statement dated Dec. 9.

The statement comes after South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol triggered a national crisis by briefly declaring martial law, which was dramatically reversed by lawmakers, who battled heavily-armed soldiers in parliament to vote it down.

Yoon remains in office after having survived an impeachment bid.

South Korea has emerged as a popular tourist destination, driven in part by "Hallyu," or the Korean wave—a term that captures the global appeal of Korean pop culture, including K-pop and K-dramas.
