MANILA — Large swaths of Luzon will continue to experience punishing heat, with the nation's weather agency forecasting "danger" level heat index over several areas on Tuesday.

PAGASA warned in its bulletin that dozens of areas in the Philippines will face scorching hot weather, with Aparri town in Cagayan expecting 46-degree Celsius heat index, which could cause heat exhaustion or stroke.

But residents could expect reprieve in the afternoon or evening with thunderstorms, the bureau said.

A low-pressure area (LPA) in the far southeast of Palawan embedded along an intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), or band of clouds, may bring scattered rains in the province Tuesday.

The ITCZ could also bring scattered rains especially in the afternoon and the evening in Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and Mindanao.

Residents in areas affected by the LPA and ITCZ are warned against possible flooding and landslides.

The easterlies, or the warm winds from the Pacific region, could bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Southern Leyte.

It could also stir isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms over Metro Manila and elsewhere in the country.
