The Department of Health on Monday warned the public against heat ilnesses as temperatures in Metro Manila are forecast to reach 46 degrees Celsius until Tuesday.

In an advisory, the health department said residents in areas experiencing danger heat index levels should take precautions against heat illnesses including heat cramps and heat exhaustion, which could lead to heat stroke. Areas under  danger heat index levels are Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan and Olongapo City.

PAGASA classifies temperatures from 33-41 degrees Celsius as under “extreme caution” while temperatures of 42 to 51 degrees are considered under “danger level.”

Residents suffering from heat stroke are advised to seek shelter away from the sun in an area where there is ventilation, remove outer clothes, use cold compress or ice pack, drink cold water, apply a cold damp cloth on the skin especially on the head, face, neck, arms, armpit, and ankles.

Patients should drink cold water slowly and seek emergency help, DOH said.
