MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday said "millions" of attempts were made to hack their website ahead of the midterm polls in May, but all failed to penetrate their secure firewall.

“Sa kasalakuyan, wala po tayong kahit isang break-in o kahit na isang hacking incident lalo na dito sa system ng Comelec,” according to Comelec chairman George Garcia.

Garcia thanked its IT personnel for securing its website against hackers.

“Yung aming website, millions ang tinatanggap ngayon na attempt para ma-hack siya, so far, walang successful. Kudos sa aming mga tauhan, 24-hour basis na nababantayan," Garcia said.

He also said that there were "almost 60,000 attempts" to hack their Online Voting and Counting System (OVCS) for the internet voting of Filipinos overseas.

According to Garcia, during the last election, the poll body’s precinct finder received about 35 million hacking attempts but none succeeded.

The precinct finder, Garcia said, will be available to the public two weeks before the May 12 elections.

Garcia said the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is already conducting its own investigation.

Although hackers pretend to come from the Middle East and a Southern African country, IT experts traced the IP address of these groups to be in the country.

The Philippines is set to hold its midterm elections on May 12.
