Microsoft Corporation will finally pull the plug on Skype in May 2025, after buying the video conferencing platform for $8.5 billion in 2011.

The move is said to shift Microsoft's focus towards Microsoft Teams, the tech giant's flagship video-conferencing tool.

“With Teams, users have access to many of the same core features they use in Skype, such as one-on-one calls and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Additionally, Teams offers enhanced features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and building and joining communities for free,” Microsoft said in a statement.

Microsoft adds that Skype users will be able to seamlessly transition to Microsoft Teams by logging in with their existing account.

Meanwhile, Skype Credit and subscription holders can continue to use them until the end of their next renewal period.

“Moving forward, we will no longer offer paid Skype features to new customers, including Skype Credit and subscriptions that allow you to make and receive international and domestic calls,” said Microsoft.

Skype users who choose not to migrate to Microsoft Teams will have until May 5, 2025, to export their data, including chats, contacts, and call history.

“Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications and supporting countless meaningful moments, and we are honored to have been part of the journey,” said Microsoft.

Founded in 2003, Skype was once a popular software that connected people for free using its video, messaging, and calling features.
