Twins Rhoelle Micah and Noelle Michaela Balbuena graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Statistics from the University of the Philippines Cebu last week.

“Please do not get confused, they are identical twins,” said Dean Dr. Alvin Roxas in jest when their names were called.

Hailing from Placer, Surigao Del Norte, the twins are daughters of a bookkeeper and an office clerk.

Both said their journey taking up a college education in Cebu was easier because they were together.

“We almost have the same interests like we both love numbers and eventually we both become interested in statistics so we came up with a mutual agreement or decision lang to take up statistics as our degree program,” shared Rhoelle.

“For survival, because I know that we can do better if we are together. Mula pagkabata ay parati na kaming magkasama ng kapatid ko at noong time na mag a-apply na kami for college ay parang hindi pa kami ready na maghiwalay,” Noelle added.

College life was “nice, fun and memorable” for the two.

“Being in the same program made my college journey bearable,” added Rhoelle.

They also disclosed that they answered their problem sets separately and studied for exams on their own pace.

PUSHING EACH OTHER

Noelle admitted there was a point in her college life that she wanted to drop some courses due to personal problems.

“But when I told that plan to my sister, she said ‘No’. She motivated me to keep going hanggang sa nabalik ang gana ko sa pag-aaral. When the grades came out, medyo na shock ako kasi ang tataas ng marka na nakuha ko kaya at the end, pareho kami ng nakuha na Latin honors and I'm happy and thankful for our achievement,” said Noelle.

“Though medyo competitive ko, I never wanted her to be left behind and I'm proud of her for making it with me,” Rhoelle also responded.

The twins are both scholars of the Department of Science and Technology and are part of the pioneer batch of the BS Statistics program of UP Cebu.

As they return home for their break they are now preparing to join the workforce to apply what they learned.

Rhoelle is applying for a lecturer position in UP Cebu while Noelle is still on the hunt.

“Statistics may be hard or challenging, but once you realize its beauty and significance to our society, you'll surely appreciate it. Let that realization motivate you to keep going or pursuing statistics,” Rhoelle further said.

Both were part of 480 graduates who finished at UP Cebu last Friday.
