Uy will be the fifth archbishop of Cebu. He succeeds Archbishop Jose Palma, who turned 75 last March, the age at which bishops are required to submit their resignation to the pope.
Palma has served as Cebu archbishop for 14 years, after succeeding the late Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

Meanwhile, Uy has been serving as archbishop of Tagbilaran for nine years, since his installation in 2016.
Ordained priest for the Diocese of Talibon in 1993, Uy earned his licentiate in sacred theology from the Loyola School of Theology in Quezon.
