The Calamba City Police and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Laguna have launched an investigation on protesters who allegedly caused an explosion outside the Laguna Provincial Capitol Extension Office on Thursday morning.

According to a report by the Calamba City Police, around 50 people  staged a protest in front of the Laguna Provincial Capitol Extension Office  in Brgy. Halang at around 7 a.m.

The protesters reportedly carried a theme of “Labanan ang bentahan ng boto sa Laguna," and were seen holding tarpaulins bearing the phrase “Sponsored: Solid Lagunense.”

Security personnel were surprised when one of the protesters detonated an improvised smoke grenade, creating thick smoke in the area.

The security guards of the Capitol extension office responded quickly and recovered four more improvised smoke grenades.

The Calamba City Police have coordinated with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit of the Calabarzon PNP to examine the recovered improvised smoke grenades.

CCTV footage from the area is also being reviewed and statements have been taken from eyewitnesses and security guards who may be able to identify the person who ignited the improvised smoke grenade.

According to Atty. Patrick Enaje, Laguna Provincial Election Supervisor, action will be taken once they identify the politician behind the incident.

“Ang nangyari parang show lang, pumunta doon. 10 minutes, tapos may tear gas, allegedly sila rin ang nagtear gas sa sarili nila tapos nagpicture. So hindi pa namin alam kung ano ang drama nila, Once luminaw kung sino yun, susulatan namin,” Enaje said.

No one was hurt in the incident.
