MANILA -- The Department of Tourism issued an advisory suspending all tourism activities near Mt. Kanlaon after it erupted Tuesday.

According to DOT, it is suspending all tourism activities near the volcano, including treks and visits to nearby destinations such as La Carlota City, Bago City, La Castellana and other surrounding areas in Negros Occidental.

"Ashfall has been reported in various barangays, particularly within La Carlota City. Additionally, several municipalities in Negros Occidental, as well as parts of Guimaras, and the provinces of Iloilo and Antique, are experiencing ashfall, with forecasts still in effect," DOT added.

DOT also advised tour agencies to abide by the strict prohibition on entry into the 6-kilometer extended danger zone implemented by the local government of Canlaon City.

"We advise tourists to postpone any travel plans to these locations and to adhere to the safety measures established by local authorities," DOT also said.

Kanlaon Volcano erupted early Tuesday morning, sending a plume of ash 4,000 meters into the sky and prompting calls for local school cancellations.

The moderately explosive eruption started at 5:51 a.m. and lasted nearly an hour, with some residents hearing audible rumbling sounds amid its unrest, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in an afternoon bulletin.

Several localities in Negros Occidental reported potentially toxic “thin” ash fall while some areas “strongly experienced” sulfurous fumes, state seismologists said.
