MANILA -- The Philippine Coast Guard on Sunday confirmed that the death toll from the ill-fated MV Hong Hai 16 has reached nine, following the recovery of additional bodies in Malawaan, Rizal in Occidental Mindoro on Saturday.

Two others remained missing, said Lt Jr. Grade Kenneth Bongabong, PGC Occidental Mindoro Station Commander.

"Simula noong nangyari ang insidente as of total siyam na po ang reported casualties. Yung missing persons po natin dalawa," he said in an interview on Teleradyo Serbisyo.

He said that MV Hong Hai has 25 crew members -- 13 of them Filipinos and 12 Chinese nationals. Bongabong declined to name the fatalities pending the notification of relatives.

"Ongoing pa rin yung marine investigation. Still for verification and confirmation," he said. "Sa ngayon, nakafocus kami sa response effort para mahanap ng natitira."

The vessel was reportedly dredging sand when it capsized about 100 meters off Barangay Malawaan on Holy Tuesday.

"Tuloy tuloy ng ating paghahanap, same pa rin ang technique, mula umaga. Bukod sa underwater search operation, 'yung mga personnel natin from marine environmental protection nagcoconduct ng seaborn patrol to monitor kung mayron sighting na oil, may katulong from other agency like DENR para magconduct ng shoreline operation," said Bongabong.

On Saturday, the provincial government of Occidental Mindoro said it will halt the operations of Bluemax Tradelink, Inc., the company dredging the Lumintao River.

During a press briefing, Gov. Eduardo Gadiano announced that a cease-and-desist order will be issued to Bluemax on Monday.

Gov. Gadiano has also ordered the ship owner, Keen Peak Corp., to begin the process of removing the MV Hong Hai 16.
