A grassfire hit Taal Volcano island on Tuesday morning, according to PHIVOLCS and the Office of the Civil Defense- CALABARZON region.

Initial reports from authorities, revealed that the fire started at the southwest portion of Taal Volcano Island, at around 11:24 this morning.

Reyan Derrick Marquez, Division Chief of the OCD- CALABARZON Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) said authorities from the Bureau of Fire Protection immediately raised the first alarm, since the fire is approximately 400 meters away from PHIVOLCS' Binintiang Munti (VTBM) Observation Station.

"Around 2:45 pm, personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard and San Nicolas Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office proceeded to the Taal Volcano Island to conduct assessment and validation," he said.

"We have stations there, monitoring stations, we are trying to prevent na madamay yung stations," he added.

Marquez said that the dispatched teams had to leave the island at around 4:00 pm due to lack of access to the PHIVOLCS vicinity.

"Walang tao sa area at grassfire iyon. Ang primary purpose nila is to prevent na ma-ano yung seismic station, and to do that they have to of course go to the station muna, pero hindi nga sila successful at this time kasi yung access papunta sa vicinity ay mahirap," he said.

Entry into Taal Volcano Island, on a normal day, is prohibited since it is considered as part of the permanent danger zone.

The Binintiang Munti Station (VTBM) of PHIVOLCS was temporarily affected by the fire and transmission of data was down for a few minutes, before it was revived at around 7:00pm, according to their latest report.

PHIVOLCS is also closely monitoring the situation and is coordinating with the DRRMCs of Batangas Province.

Alert level 1 prevails over Taal Volcano.
