MANILA — In the heart of every mountaineer, there lies a companion that enhances the experience—an unyielding bond that goes beyond humans.

For Henry Wong, that companion is his loyal dog, Bundok. Together, they have conquered 14 majestic mountains, showcasing the extraordinary connection between humans and their furry friends. This inspiring tale is not just about reaching summits; it's about the journey and the love that fuels it.

Every adventure is unique, and for Wong and Bundok, the challenges faced on these trails solidified their relationship. One of the toughest moments came when they encountered a daunting rock face.

"Ang pinakamahirap na sitwasyon na kinaharap namin ni Bundok habang nasa trail kami yung mangagaling kami sa taas ng falls kailangan namin mag rock climbing pababa," said Wong in a text message.

He added: "Mabuti nalang dala ko ung carrier bag niya kaya inilagay ko si Bundok doon at sinukbit ko sa likod ko at sabay kami nakababa sa falls."

(It was a good thing I brought his carrier bag, so I put him in it and we climbed down together)

This method exemplifies the mutual trust between the two, with Wong prepared to ensure Bundok’s safety and Bundok staying by his side, demonstrating the loyalty of a true companion.

“Sa 14 mountains na naakyat namin ni Bundok together never ko pa naranasan na nahihirapan akong kasama siya kasi si Bundok napaka-behaved niya sa trail. Hindi siya lumalayo sa akin. Hindi tulad ng ibang aso kung saan saan sumusuot.”

One notable adventure also took place in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija, where Bundok had an uncharacteristic outburst.

"Nakipag-away siya sa kambing. First time ko siya nakita nang ganoon kagalit, pero nabawal ko naman siya."

(He got in a fight with goats. It was my first time to see him that angry, but I was able to restrain him)

Yet, rather than spiraling into chaos, Wong maintained control, proving his ability to manage situations as they arise, underscoring the importance of obedience training for any pet owner.

Mountaineering has offered Wong many cherished moments with Bundok. One of his fondest memories was the warmth of Bundok providing comfort against the icy mountain air.

“Kami lang magkasama sa tent, tapos maginaw. Siyempre diba ang aso mainit ang katawan siya ang kayakap ko para hindi ako masyadong lamigin."

(We were the only ones in the tent and it was cold. Of course, because dogs are warm, I hugged him so I wouldn't get too cold)

This feeling of companionship is irreplaceable, turning an ordinary camping trip into an extraordinary memory filled with affection. Another highlight was their time spent by the river, where both human and dog splashed about, sharing laughter and joy with fellow climbers.

PREPPING FOR CLIMBS

Wong’s preparatory work for these adventures goes beyond packing for himself; he meticulously organized Bundok’s needs. His canine companion enjoys a diet along with plenty of fresh water to keep him hydrated during treks.

Ensuring Bundok's wellbeing is paramount, so Wong keeps the pup fit and healthy by regularly exercising and maintaining good stamina. Exercise routine helps Bundok acclimatize to the demands of the mountains.

“Una, five days before climb namin nage-exercise kami ni Bundok. Nagjo-joging kami, lakad lakad sa park. Tapos dapat ready lahat ng essential needs namin sa mountain."

(Five days before the climb, we exercise. We jog and take walks in the park. And of course, our essential needs must be prepared for the climb)

Bundok's protective nature often shines through, especially during precarious moments, Sensing potential danger, Bundok moves closer, ever watchful, proving that a dog is not just a pet but a guardian spirit.

Adding a playful note to his personality, Bundok has an unusual fondness for vegetables adding a touch of the unexpected to his otherwise adventurous life.

“Favorite niya talaga nilagang sitaw at pechay kumakain din sya ampalaya.”

Wong treasures the bond he shares with Bundok. His advice to fellow fur parents is simply this: Love your pets unconditionally.

“Si Bundok para sa akin, hindi lang siya basta pet, alaga or hiking buddy lang. Isa ko siyang anak, galing siya sa puso ko.”

(Bundok for me is more than a pet or a hiking body. Our bond is like with a child, it comes from my heart)

This love not only enhances the connection but also empowers dogs to accomplish what might seem impossible.

“Ako para sa akin pag mahal mo ang isang nilalang, ang totoong pag-train sa kanya ay   'Pagmamahal'. Kasi pag mahal mo siya, walang mahirap, walang imposible.”

(For me, the best training is love. If you love them, nothing is too hard. Nothing is impossible)

With each mountain they conquer, Wong and Bundok epitomize the spirit of adventure—a testament to the incredible experiences that await those who embrace the great outdoors with their beloved pets.
