Thousands of supporters converged at Roxas Avenue and C.M. Recto Street in Davao City this Friday afternoon to participate in "Rody at 80" celebrating the 80th birthday of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

They wore green shirts, and some donned caps featuring a print of Duterte's face as they expressed ongoing calls for his immediate release from detention at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, The Netherlands.

The program included performances by local artists and speeches from key personalities. A cake bearing Duterte's image was also displayed on stage, and a drone show was expected to take place at night.

Thousands of supporters converged at Roxas Avenue and C.M. Recto Street in Davao CitySince Wednesday, some roads have been closed in preparation for the event, with tarpaulins posted and red knots tied to show support for Duterte.

A shopping mall closed early, and some schools implemented blended learning, as heavy traffic was anticipated due to the gathering.

The supporters claim that the headcount has already reached over 100,000 while the Davao City Police Office assert that the crowd estimate is still at 60,000.

Over 2,000 police personnel and auxiliary officers were also deployed to ensure peace and order.
