The Philippine Coast Guard rescued six crew members and recovered the bodies of two others after a Philippine-flagged tugboat collided with a Panamanian-flagged vessel in the waters of Maasim, Sarangani province Tuesday morning.

According to PCG, they sent ships to conduct search and rescue operations in the area, where six crew members of M/TUG Sadong 33 were rescued. Two others, the tugboat's captain, and oiler, did not survive the incident.

According to the survivors, the tugboat was towing LCT Sea Asia from Glan, Sarangani enroute to Iligan City when MV Universe Kiza passed between the two vessels, damaging the towing rope, leading to the capsizing of M/TUG Sadong 33.

All survivors underwent health checkups and are all in good physical condition.

Authorities have laid out oil spill booms in the area despite a negative initial oil spill assessment result.

As of Tuesday afternoon, LCT Sea Asia remained in the vicinity waters of Maasim, while MV Universe Kiza continued its voyage to General Santos City, where it will drop anchor to cooperate with the investigation.
