MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Saturday said it is difficult for aid and services to reach the grassroots level when the national government does not have a good relationship with local officials.

Marcos Jr. made the statement when he visited a government-sponsored job and health services fair in Biñan, Laguna ahead of his expected attendance at the “Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas” campaign sortie in the neighboring town of Sta. Rosa.

Marcos Jr. then urged the crowd to continue communicating their needs to the national government through their local leaders.

Vice President Sara Duterte has repeatedly accused the administration of using aid projects like Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) and Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) to lure voters to support administration candidates.

Duterte — who ended her alliance with Marcos in mid-2024 — alleged that this has supposedly institutionalized the use of public funds for vote buying, a claim which government agencies have consistently denied.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) — which oversees the TUPAD and AICS programs — said that beneficiaries for its projects undergo proper vetting using metrics that are free from politicking.
