Slain comedian Gold Dagal received threats over dark humor, says mom

MANILA — Stand-up comedian Goldenier Dagal received threats from individuals offended by his dark humor prior to his fatal shooting, his mother said.

Dagal, 38, was shot dead by three unidentified assailants inside a bar in Angeles City on Saturday, according to an initial police report. The suspects immediately fled after the attack.

“My son is gone. A hired killer ended his life and made sure he does not survive,” said Dagal’s mother Jocelyn Cruz.

“I know those he offended with his jokes during one of his stints in his stand-up comedy shows had planned to end his life like how they constantly threatened,” she said in a Facebook post.

Dagal was rushed to a nearby hospital but died nine hours later after suffering more than ten cardiac arrests, his mother said.

“I have always reminded him that engaging in such dark humor can alienate or offend others. But some people who claim to be closest to God planned and perpetrated this crime,” Cruz wrote.

“They are a bunch of cowards who cannot defend themselves and their faith which was put in question through his dark humor,” she added.

Cruz said her son once shared that he wanted to create an avenue where people could explore uncomfortable topics in a safe environment.

She described Dagal as a kindhearted son and a protective brother.

“Such a short life but made meaningful because it was lived selflessly. He was consistent with his care and love for me and his three sisters,” she wrote.

Authorities have launched a dragnet operation to identify the attackers and uncover their motives.
