Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday said it would help secure a five-meter &quot;zone of avoidance&quot; around the Bogo Bay Fault that triggered last week&#x27;s <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/10/4/marcos-visits-quake-victims-oversees-relief-efforts-in-cebu-2113">magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu.</a></p><p>Following new recommendations from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the PNP was tasked to assist in enforcing the safety buffer to reduce the risk of damage and casualties in the event of a ground-rupturing earthquake.</p><p>Acting PNP chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said local police units were mobilized to work closely with disaster officials and local government units (LGUs) in the region.</p><p>“I have directed our regional and local police units, particularly in Central Visayas, to immediately coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management councils and implement proactive safety measures,” Nartatez said.</p><p>“Our police stations in Bogo City and neighboring areas have been tasked to assist in information dissemination, patrol vulnerable communities, and help local authorities enforce safety perimeters within the 5-meter zone of avoidance.”</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/lifestyle/people-culture-events/2025/10/6/cebu-earthquake-damages-5-heritage-churches-dot-2129">Cebu earthquake damages 5 heritage churches: DOT</a></div><p>Based on the report, the &quot;zone of avoidance&quot; refers to a five-meter buffer zone on each side of the Bogo Bay Fault trace. </p><p>The area is considered unsafe for any permanent structure, as ground movement during an earthquake could cause severe damage or loss of life.</p><p>Local governments were advised to prohibit construction and assist in relocating any homes or buildings currently sitting within the fault buffer.</p><p>To support the enforcement of this recommendation, the PNP deployed mobile patrols to monitor the area, prevent illegal construction, and assist in risk communication campaigns aimed at educating residents.</p><p>“Our role is to provide security, maintain public order during any evacuation or clearing operations, and support the enforcement of the recommended safety buffer,” said Nartatez.</p><p>Police visibility will also be heightened in affected barangays to prevent the spread of misinformation and ensure calm during the implementation of the safety measures.</p><p>“Disasters may test our strength, but they also reveal our unity.
