4,500 families now affected from Ethanol spill in Negros Oriental

A chemical spill from an ethanol plant in Manjuyod and Bais City in Negros Oriental has left scores of dead fish and affected thousands of families. Provincial agriculturist Emmanuel Caduyac said the ethanol spill has contaminated 11 hectares of cultured bangus and left water water surrounding the ponds brackish. “We see frequent floating of tilapia. Ang bangus fry nangamatay na (the bangus fry are now dead). The numbers are rising, the mortality of our fingerlings,” he said. A Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Central Visayas advisory warned of possible health risks from eating contaminated seafood sourced from the Bais, Manjuyod and its facing towns in Southern Cebu. “The public is advised to refrain from fishing, collecting, and gathering aquatic organisms, such as but not limited to finfish, crustaceans, and seaweeds, in the affected areas,” according to the advisory signed by BFAR 7 Regional Director Mario Ruinata. Collecting dead fish and other aquatic organisms is also not recommended &quot;as they may contain harmful pathogens, chemicals, and pollutants that pose risks to human health.&quot; Cebu Province, meanwhile, warned of possible tubli (rotenone) poisoning and its potential link to fishkills or aquatic contamination. They are monitoring activities along the western coast of Cebu which includes Toledo City, Pinamungajan, Aloguinsan, Barili, Dumanjug, and Ronda. “These areas share the same marine corridor and may experience secondary effects through current movement, depending on the extent and direction of water flow,” Governor Pamela Baricuatro said in a statement. There is no confirmed report of contamination affecting Cebu province water but precautionary measures and situational monitoring will be implemented.Negros Oriental Governor Chaco Sagarbarria said 4,500 families are now affected by the ethanol spill including 3,000 fisherfolks from 13 barangays. These are Tamiso, San Isidro, Tancolugan, Okyot, Looc, Binohon, Olympia and Talongon in Bais City; and Maaslom, Alangilanan, Dungguan, San Jose and Campuyo in Manjuyod. Authorities will give financial aid to the affected families as well as family food packs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The distillery company is now working on repairing the damaged sea wall and the lagoon dike while containing the spill.
