PNP chief: Strict enforcement, warning signs to deter stunts on Marilaque

MANILA (UPDATED) — Police Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, chief of the Philippine National Police, said the police will implement road safety rules on the Marikina-Rizal-Laguna-Quezon Highway — commonly called Marilaque —  but that engineering solutions are also needed to discourage stunts and racing there.

This, following a viral video of a crash that claimed the life of a motorcycle rider while performing a dangerous “Superman” stunt.

The viral video shows two motorcycle riders attempting the dangerous maneuver but losing control and crashing into bystanders and other vehicles in the area.

“Of course, strikto tayo. Pagka nahuli ka namin, we have to impound and suspend your licenses. But… ang deterrent niyan is to have more engineering doon,” Marbil told reporters at Camp Crame, Quezon City on Thursday.

(Of course, we will be strict. If we catch you, we have to impound your motorcycle and suspend your licenses. But engineering will be the better deterrent there)

He said signs warning of sharp curves on the road and reminding motorists to drive and ride safely would help discourage risky behavior.

“At least alam ng mga tao na ito lang yung limit mo kasi last time, mga nagmomotor, walang limit nandun,” he added.

(At least people will know what the limit is)

He said the police need to work with local government and the Department of Public Works and Highways to keep that stretch of Marilaque safer for the public.

Following the incident and to avoid similar accidents, the PNP Highway Patrol Group (HPG) deployed more personnel and intensified patrol operations along the Marilaque Highway.

EJERCITO WANTS PERMANENT POLICE PRESENCE ON HIGHWAY

Meanwhile, Sen. JV Ejercito, a riding enthusiast, said authorities should put up a permanent checkpoint on Marilaque.

"Pag may checkpoint kasi, umaayos naman sila eh. Diba? Hindi na ginagawang race track," he said.

(When there is a checkpoint there, the riders behave, right? They don't use it as a race track)

He said he has talked to the PNP and to Rizal provincial officials, who said they would put checkpoints and rumble strips on the highway.

"Pag nandyan yung HPG, umaayos sila, tumitino. Kaya lang hindi kasi ano eh, dapat siguro gawin na ng PNP na regular na nandoon talaga every day," he said.

(When the HPG is deployed, riders behave. But I think the police should have people there every day)

He said he used to ride along Marilaque often but has not been there in years because of the accidents.

"Sayang kasi. Marilaque is so beautiful. Marami diyan naman maayos. Makikita mga couples doon na magka-angkas sila. Talagang magpapasyal lang. Magkakape. Kakain doon. So sana maibalik 'yun."

(It's a shame because Marilaque is so beautiful. Many of the people who ride there are responsible. You'll see couples riding there, just enjoying the scenery. Or having coffee, or dining. I hope that can be brought back)
