MANILA — A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook Southern Leyte on Thursday morning, leaving visible damage in several areas and prompting class disruptions in some schools.

In Barangay Himay-angan, Liloan in Southern Leyte, the concrete road split apart, as seen in a video captured by Kennlochel Borbonga Rovelo.

Local authorities and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) are working to assess the situation. 

Residents were advised to stay alert and report any additional damage to their barangay officials. Further updates will be provided as assessments continue.

Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado also suspended classes in all public and private schools to keep students safe.

Mercado also ordered the City Engineer and other officials to check school buildings and government offices to ensure they are safe and not damaged by the earthquake.

In Barangay Punta in San Francisco, Southern Leyte, several houses were seen damaged following the quake. 

A landslide was also spotted in the mountain area of the barangay. 

Barangay officials have yet to report any injury due tot he quake.

The earthquake was also felt in some parts of Cebu City.

A cellphone video from teacher Eamar Abadia showed students of Don Vicente Rama Memorial National High school running outside from their rooms during the quake.

As of 9 a.m., around 45 aftershocks were recorded after the quake struck at 7:39 a.m.
