MANILA — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) confirmed on Wednesday receiving reports about the alleged discovery of an underwater drone or glider in the seawaters off Bohol.

In a statement, the AFP said appropriate units and forces, particularly the Naval Forces Central, are working together to gather details and “ascertain the nature of the incident.”

“The AFP, through the Visayas Command, has prioritized the investigation into the reported discovery of unidentified equipment floating at sea,” the military said.

An undated video circulating online shows a silver and red drone floating near a fisherman’s boat. The fisherman chose not to retrieve the device.

The AFP urged the fisherman who took the video to help them locate the drone.

“At this time, the AFP does not have the equipment in its possession for conducting a forensic investigation,” the military said.

“We urge the individual who discovered the equipment and posted it on social media to immediately coordinate with the nearest military or naval units to ensure the proper handling and disposition of the item,” it added.

The AFP also called on the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities or discoveries to authorities.

The Philippine Navy last week said five underwater drones were recovered in different areas in the country last year.

Two of these were recovered in Calayan Island in the Babuyan Group of Islands; one in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; one in Initao, Misamis Oriental; and the most recent discovery in San Pascual, Masbate last December.

The drones already underwent forensic analysis, which takes six to eight weeks.

So far, only one of the drones recovered in Calayan Island yielded results.
