MANILA — The Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order against the Commission on Elections in favor of Mandaue City mayoralty candidate Jonas Cortes.

In a statement issued Monday, the high court prevented the poll body from implementing its resolution canceling Cortes’ certificate of candidacy for mayor of Mandaue City in the May elections.

“The TRO also prevented the Comelec from deleting his name from the list of candidates for the said position,” the SC said.

The SC ordered the Comelec to comment within a non-extendible period of 15 days from receipt of the notice.

The poll body said it would comply with the order.

Last week, the Comelec paused its printing of ballots after the SC ordered the inclusion of the names of several aspirants whose disqualification was prohibited by the court.
