ZAMBOANGA CITY — A policeman who was rendering covert duty at a church on New Year's day was wounded after two gunmen appeared and opened fire at him in Barangay Ayala in Zamboanga City Tuesday night. 

A video from Barangay Ayala's CCTV footage shows PSMS Ryan Mariano hurriedly crossing the street amid the traffic, just as he was being shot by the two suspects who arrived on board a black motorcycle.

Mariano was able to fire back, instantly killing one of the gunmen.

The policeman sought cover from a vehicle that stopped in the middle of the road as the shootout continued between him and the other suspect.

Despite sustaining a gunshot wound in his chest, Mariano was able to shoot the remaining assailant, who was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

PSMS Mariano, meanwhile, was brought to a nearby hospital and is now out of danger.

Police identified the suspects as Haber Tating, who had a standing warrant of arrest for two counts of murder. His companion has yet to be identified.

Authorities have yet to disclose the possible motive of the suspects in attacking PSMS Mariano.
