MANILA (UPDATED) — Kanlaon Volcano in Negros island erupted on Monday afternoon, Phivolcs said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the 3 p.m. eruption "produced a voluminous plume that rapidly rose to 3,000 meters."

Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or hot, ground-hugging flows of ash and debris descended from Kanlaon's southeastern slopes, it added.

Phivolcs raised the alert level for the volcano from 2 to 3 on a zero-to-five scale, warning more explosive eruptions were possible.

Local governments were advised to evacuate the 6-kilometer radius of the volcano.

The local government of Canlaon City, Negros Oriental ordered a forced evacuation for residents living near the foot of Kanlaon.

In a live broadcast, Mayor Butchok Cardenas said the order covered barangays Pula, Masulog, Malaiba and Lumapao.

"Importante ang safety first," said Cardenas.

"Evacuations are ongoing" in four upland villages of La Castellana town, on the volcano's southwest slope, municipal police officer Staff Sergeant Ronel Arevalo said, though he did not have the total number of residents to be evacuated.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development said it had prepositioned family food packs in key areas.

"More than 5,000 [food packs were] in Vallehermoso. We have prepositioned 10,000 in Guihulngan and another in Canlaon city," DSWD-Central Visayas Director Shalaine Lucero said.

Non-food items such as family kits, hygiene kits, modular tents, kitchen kits and sleeping kits were also on standby, she said.

In September hundreds of nearby residents had been evacuated after the volcano spurted thousands of tonnes of harmful gases in a single day.

The seismology office said Kanlaon has erupted more than 40 times since 1866.

In 1996, three hikers were killed due to ash ejection from the volcano.

Rising more than 2,400 meters above sea level, Kanlaon is one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines.

The Philippines is located in the seismically active Pacific "Ring of Fire", which contains more than half the world's volcanoes.
