PHIVOLCS-DOST MANILA – The Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island on Wednesday emitted ash, resulting in plumes as high as 500 meters above the crater, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said they were able to observe the ash emissions between 9:47 a.m. and 10:27 a.m. and from 4:12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. this Wednesday.

The plumes drifted west to southwest, the agency added.

Based on its 8 a.m. bulletin, Phivolcs said it was able to record 9 volcanic earthquakes and 6,432 tons of Sulfur Dioxide Flux.

Kanlaon is currently at Alert Level 2 which means increasing unrest, but the ongoing developments in its seismic activity may lead to eruptive unrest and an increase in alert level, Phivolcs said.

Currently, residents and tourists are prohibited to enter the 4 kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) of the area.

In June, Mount Kanlaon erupted for six minutes, sending off a plume of ash, rocks and gases five kilometers in the sky.
