(UPDATED) An election officer from Sulu province escaped death after unidentified gunmen fired at his vehicle at Villa Sta. Maria, Zamboanga City Saturday morning.

Atty. Vidzfar Julie, Provincial Election Supervisor of Sulu, was on board his Toyota Fortuner when the gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at his vehicle.

Julie was unharmed but his brother, Nasser Asiri, sustained a gunshot wound in the head. He was immediately brought to a hospital but later died.

The perpetrators, who were wearing helmets and black jackets, immediately fled onboard a white motorcycle.

In a Facebook post, Julie posted a photo of his bullet-ridden vehicle with a caption "Mga duwag, kung matapang kayo magpakilala kayo kung sino kayo para walang madamay na ibang tao. Buhay pa ako mga duwag."

"No words are enough to condemn this treacherous act of violence against our people. What is more gruesome and unforgivable is when a loved one is caught in the crossfire so to speak. We are not yet prepared to cry hopelessness but a call for immediate action from authorities is strongly demanded," Garcia said in a statement Saturday.
