MANILA -- A minor steam-driven eruption was observed at Taal Volcano on Tuesday morning, the disaster council said.

"Naganap ang steam-driven o phreatic na pagputok sa Bulkang Taal patungo sa timog-kanluran dakong 05:58 ng umaga," the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on social media.

A phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when magma interacts with water and produces plumes of steam, ash and other volcanic materials.

Taal shot a 2.8-kilometer-tall plume into the sky, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology added.

Taal Volcano, which sits in the middle of a lake south of Manila, remained at a low level 1 alert on a 0-5 scale, the NDRRMC said.

Under alert level 1, entry into the Taal Volcano Island is banned and aircraft are prohibited from flying close to the volcano. More steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, and minor ashfall are also possible.
