MANILA -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Tuesday warned those staying near the erupting Kanlaon Volcano to take extra precaution against "very dangerous" emissions from the volcano.

Some pyroclastic density current (PDC) events were monitored in the Kanlaon Volcano, PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol told state television PTV.

"Ang PDC or ang pyroclastic density current ay isang mabilis na daloy ng mainit na volcanic gases, pinaghalo-halo po ito – volcanic gases, ash at pira-pirasong bato na bumababa galing sa bulkan – and may speed po na umaabot ng daan-daang kilometro kada oras," he said.

"Mixture po iyan ng buhangin na galing sa bulkan, abo, iyong volcanic gas at saka mga volcanic fragments," he said.

"Very dangerous po ito, sinisira ang lahat ng madadaanan ng PDC katulad ng puno, gusali at puwede ring makakitil ng buhay," he added.

The first PDC was spotted around the volcano's south-southeast portion, some 3.5 kilometers from the summit, Bacolcol said.

Those in the area are reminded not to breach the 6-kilometer danger zone around the volcano as fumes surrounding the Kanlaon may be deadly, the PHIVOLCS chief said.

"Kapag madaanan ka ng PDC, most likely magiging casualty ka kasi mabilis po iyong takbo ng PDC – hundreds of kilometers per hour – and puwede pong ma-incinerate po ang tao," he said.

"Ang kailangan nating pagtuunan ng pansin ay iyong abo na nanggaling po sa bulkan, kapag nalanghap po natin ito ay puwede pong ma-aggravate iyong respiratory tract natin lalo na kapag may problema tayo sa baga katulad noong may mga hika and heart problems," he said.

PHIVOLCS encourages the public to wear face masks and remain vigilant, Bacolcol said.

Kanlaon Volcano was earlier placed under alert level 3, which means that a hazardous eruption is possible in the coming weeks after the volcano spewed dark gray ash columns on Monday.

The recent volcanic activity prompted flight cancellations and the evacuation of more than 80,000 villagers.
