KJ Rosales, PPA pool/File<br/></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos to “do more than remember” forebears who fought for the Philippines’ freedom and causes on National Heroes’ Day.</p><p>Marcos said he hopes Filipinos will “renew our solemn duty to carry forward the nation for which they fought and sacrificed” in honor of those who “won our freedom, defended our dignity, and laid the foundations of the Republic we cherish.”</p><p>“We honor them best by embodying their courage, keeping the flame of patriotism alive and becoming the citizens our country needs,” the President said in his National Heroes’ Day message this year.</p><p>“Their spirit endures in every Filipino who chooses to serve, care, and contribute to a cause greater than oneself,” he said.</p><p>Heroism may be seen in every Filipino “who helps a neighbor, protects the vulnerable, and works honestly for the common good,” Marcos said.</p><p>“We see it in our soldiers and first responders who risk their lives to keep us safe. We recognize it in our teachers, health workers, farmers, fisherfolk, and overseas Filipinos who sustain our families and communities,” he said.</p><p>“As we forge ahead, may we continually prove ourselves worthy of the liberty entrusted to us and build a country that generations yet to come will proudly inherit,” he said. “Let the Bagong Pilipinas we are shaping continue to revere the heroes of the past, present, and future.”</p><p>National Heroes’ Day was first celebrated in the Philippines in the 1930s after Filipino lawmakers passed Act No. 3827, which declared the last Sunday of August as National Heroes’ Day.</p><p>In 2007, then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo moved National Heroes’ Day to every last Monday of August to give Filipinos ample time to commemorate the celebration of heroism in the country.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO</strong></div><div><strong><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_pZo7_It7II?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></strong><br/></div>
