Caloocan LGU says garbage collection is regular, urges residents to follow schedule amid collection issues

MANILA -- The local government of Caloocan has insisted that garbage collection in the city remains regular, amid circulating reports of uncollected waste piling up in some areas during the recent holiday season.Earlier reports pointed to complaints from residents of Barangay 174, where garbage was allegedly left uncollected for several days. However, Barangay Chairman Gilbert Rivera denied these claims, saying waste collection in their area is conducted twice daily. “Regular po ang koleksyon dito mam sa amin barangay. Yung truck ng city may dumadaan dito sa barangay kasi may staff ako na naka-assign para mag-guide sa area. Yung tungkol naman mam sa main road, nagpapadala naman ang city dyan. Ang koleksyon nyan sa umaga hanggang 8am at sa gabi 9–10pm, hindi lang po sa main road na sakop ng Brgy 174, maging sa ibang road,” Rivera said.<div><a class="fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/14/trash-after-the-holidays-caloocan-residents-allege-weeks-long-garbage-collection-delays-0929">Trash after the holidays: Caloocan residents allege weeks-long garbage collection delays</a></div>Rivera acknowledged that garbage volume tends to increase during the Christmas and New Year season due to frequent celebrations and long holidays, which can cause temporary adjustments in collection schedules.“Simula December hanggang January, may mga long vacation din mam, nagkakaroon talaga ng adjustment, so ang ginagawa naman ng city government, within 2nd week or 3rd week nagnonormalize na ulit, yes mam normal na mam,” he added. The barangay chairman also appealed to residents to avoid placing their garbage along the streets before the scheduled collection time of the Caloocan City Environmental Management Department (CEMD).“Ang dapat huwag muna nilang ilalabas ang basura nila kung wala pa yung truck. Regular naman kasi ang hakot ng basura sa ating barangay. Ang pinakamahalaga talaga ang disiplina na tumulong sa barangay… sa city na huwag magtapon ng basura kung saan-saan,” Rivera said. According to the CEMD, aside from daily garbage collection along major roads in North and South Caloocan every morning ang evening, inner-barangay collections are also conducted twice a week.Some residents, however, claimed that the garbage problem is worsened by people from other areas who allegedly dump their trash in Barangay 174.“Sana hintayin na lang yung collection ng basura. Minsan yung hindi taga-dito, nagtatapon din dyan eh—nakakotse pa, naka-van, motor at tricycle. Kami ang naapektuhan kasi yung lola ko matanda na, minsan sumasama ang pakiramdam niya kasi malakas yung amoy,” said Renz, who lives near a garbage dumping area in the barangay.Renz added that the issue has already been reported to barangay officials.“Nalapit na po yan sa barangay. Nakikita ko umaga at hatinggabi, pinipick up nila yun kaya walang problema yun. Kahit maraming basura, nahahakot nila yan—yun ang totoo yun,” Dapin said. Under Caloocan City Ordinance No. 0753, individuals caught dumping garbage in public places or improper disposal areas may face fines ranging from ₱500 to ₱5,000.Last week, the Caloocan City government also released an official statement acknowledging delays in garbage collection in some areas and assured residents that the issue has been raised with service providers and is being addressed. “The City acknowledges the recent issues affecting garbage collection services in several areas. We understand the inconvenience this has caused our constituents and we take these concerns seriously,” said Caloocan City Administrator Aurora C. Ciego in a statement.“The matter has been formally raised with the contracted service providers, who have been directed to address the problem without delay,” the statement read.<div> </div>
