MANILA — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, and US President Donald Trump are expected to discuss closer economic and defense and security cooperation when they meet in Washington DC next week, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

Marcos Jr. will be in Washington DC from July 20 to 22 at Trump's invitation, with a meeting at the White House capping the visit.

“As you are all aware, the President’s official visit also aims to address the US tariff proposed to be levied on Philippine exports,” Assistant Secretary Raquel Solano of the DFA Office of American Affairs said in a Palace briefing Friday.

The meeting comes as the Philippines continues to negotiate the US imposition of 20% tariffs on Philippine exports to the US, up from the initial announcement of 17%.

“We hope, of course, to arrive at a bilateral trade agreement or a deal on reciprocal trade that is mutually acceptable, mutually beneficial, for both our countries,” she said.

Marcos Jr will also hold talks with American business groups, most of which are already in the process of investing in the Philippines.

'STRENGTHENING THE PH-US ALLIANCE'

Marcos Jr will also hold key meetings with State Secretary Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on the 21st, the DFA official added.

“The purpose of this visit is to further strengthen the Philippines-United States alliance, to proactively engage the US in all aspect of the relations and seize opportunities for greater security and economic cooperation," she said.

"We will continue to underscore that for the Philippines to be a truly strong partner for the United States, we need to be stronger economically as well,” she said.

With the Philippines chairing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2026, Marcos Jr. will invite Trump to attend the East Asia Summit in Manila next year.

“Coincidentally, our two countries will mark 80 years of our diplomatic relations and 75 years of the alliance next year, and it will be an auspicious time for President Trump to come to Manila,” she said.

Cabinet secretaries who will join the President on his trip include Foreign Affairs Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., Trade Secretary Christina Roque, National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, Acting Presidential Communications Secretary Dave Gomez, Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Frederick Go and, of course, Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez.
