MANILA — Two individuals apprehended by police in Parañaque City for illegal possession of explosives and firearms on Friday have undergone inquest proceedings, the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group said on Monday.

The suspects, identified by their aliases as JJ and Lito, were charged at the Offices of the City Prosecutor of Parañaque City and Quezon City with violations of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act; Republic Act 9516 or the Unlawful Possession of Explosives, Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code or Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority; Article 178 or Concealing of True Name; and Presidential Decree 96 or Use of Unauthorized Blinkers.

WHAT HAPPENED

The two suspects’ SUV was stopped by policemen at the Filipinas Avenue around 1:40 p.m. due to multiple traffic violations, including not having a rear plate, using a blinker without authorization, and failing to show necessary documents upon inspection.

When the PNP-HPG’s Special Operations Division searched the vehicle, they discovered guns and explosives including a Glock 19 pistol, bullet-proof vests, deadly weapons, suspected C4 explosives, and other suspicious paraphernalia.

PNP-HPG spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang said, upon verification, it was found that the SUV was registered under alias JJ’s company.

Malang said they are still waiting for the certification from the PNP – Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Group (PNP-EOD/K9G) regarding the full details of the suspected C4 explosives.

“Also, the firearm na dala niya ay wala po talagang lisensya. Isa ‘yan sa hiningan din natin ng certification sa FEO [Firearms and Explosives Office],” he said.

According to Malang, authorities are still backtracking another SUV believed to have acted as a backup and possibly carrying more suspects.

“Sa kasamahan naman niya during the flagdown, nagba-backtracking pa ang ating mga imbestigador kung may mga CCTV na nakahagip sa Fortuner na kasama ng naflagdown na sasakyan,” he said.

HISTORY OF OTHER CRIMES

In a press conference on Sunday, Ambassador Markus Lacanilao, Special Envoy on Transnational Crime, said alias JJ escaped from a Pasay City entrapment operation last year, where three suspects were arrested for extortion and claiming they had connections with the First Family.

The suspects were also involved in land-grabbing issues in Bulacan, he added.

“Si alias JJ, talagang pakilala niya ay businessman. May history na siya ng cases patungkol sa swindling at estafa. Backtracking pa ang mga imbestigador para mapag-alaman pa kung ano pa ang criminal history ni alias JJ at kasama niya,” Malang noted.

The PNP-HPG is still determining whether the suspects belong to a larger group involved in fraudulent activities.
