MANILA — The driver of a sports utility vehicle that crashed into the entrance area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in early May was released from detention after the court granted him bail, authorities confirmed Friday.

A Pasay City Regional Trial Court set a P100,000 bail for the  47-year-old driver who was charged with reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide, multiple serious physical injuries and damage to property.

Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Eric Ines confirmed receipt of the Pasay court bail order.

“We have to abide with the court order. Wala kami magagawa korte iyan eh,” Ines said in a phone interview on Friday morning.

The PNP Aviation Security Group, which handled the investigation, also confirmed receiving the bail order.

A 4-year-old girl and a 29-year-old man died after an SUV rammed into the departure entrance area at NAIA Terminal 1 on Sunday.

The driver initially said he was rattled by a vehicle which allegedly cut him. But CCTV footage has proven this was not the case.

The motorist tested negative for drugs and alcohol, the Aviation Police said last week.

Fernando Nicolas, uncle of crash fatality Dearick “Keo” Faustino, said his family understands the rights of the accused.

“Nakakalungkot na nakalabas na sa kulungan ang akusado, ngunit nauunawaan naming homicide case ito kaya’t may karapatan siyang magpiyansa, ang SUV driver,” Nicolas said in a text message to ABS-CBN News.
