The collision happened along the EDSA Quezon Avenue Tunnel in Barangay South Triangle at around 5:40 a.m., the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said in a statement.

A QCPD officer riding a motorcycle had tried to break up a fight between the drivers of the UV Express vehicles, which had stopped inside the tunnel.

Amid the ruckus, a bus arrived and crashed into the stationary vehicles. The policeman was sandwiched between two UV Express vans.

The windshield of the bus was shattered, and three of its passengers sustained injuries. Both UV Express drivers were also hurt.

“Sa ngayon, iniinda niya po yung lower extremities niya,” QCPD Traffic Sector 4 commander PLt. Sibyl Anne Armada said.

Jobert Joson, one of the UV Express drivers, said he could barely recall what happened after the impact.

“Bumaba siya, sabi niya, ‘Hindi naman away hanap ko eh, hanapbuhay eh.’ Sabi ko, ‘bakit ka bumaba?’ May dumating na pulis, tinanong bakit kami nag-uusap nang ganun, bakit kami nandun. Sabi, ‘Sir, binangga nito, kinut pa ako nito.’ Aminado ka ba? Umamin naman. After nun, wala na ako maalala—na-black out na ako,” said Joson.

Bus driver Alvin Gimena claimed he did not see the stationary vehicles.

“Pagdating ko sa Quezon Ave. Tunnel, hindi ko akalain na may naka-stop na UV doon—walang sign, walang warning device, walang ilaw. Nabulaga ako, nabangga ko likuran ng UV,” he said.

The bus company has expressed willingness to shoulder the medical expenses of all injured parties.

The bus driver was placed under police custody and could face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property and multiple physical injuries.
