MANILA (UPDATE) — Makati City will remain under the rule of the Binay family after Sen. Nancy Binay defeated her estranged sister's husband Luis Campos in the mayoralty race.

Binay was proclaimed as the new mayor of Makati City on Tuesday.

The outgoing senator defeated her brother-in-law, Rep. Luis Campos, for the city's top post and replaces her sister, incumbent mayor Abby Binay.

Also proclaimed were Vice Mayor Kid Peña; congressman-elect Monique Lagdameo of the first district and Alden Almario of the second district; and councilors from Districts 1 and 2.

The Binay family has held the city hall since 1988, except from 2015 to 2016 after then-Mayor Jejomar Erwin "Junjun" Binay Jr. was dismissed from office.

In 2016, Abby Binay took over Makati City's top post. She decided to run for the Senate in the 2025 polls and anointed her husband as her successor.

But the Binays do not see Campos as their own, with Junjun publicly disowning his brother-in-law.

"Si Luis is my brother-in-law. Hindi naman siya Binay. Hindi din naman siya mananalo ng posisyon niya kung hindi din dahil nakapangasawa siya ng isang Binay," Junjun said in 2024.

Abby has publicly admitted being "different" from her siblings.
