DIGOS CITY — Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday said that she does not expect the House of Representatives to “seriously” tackle an impeachment complaint that is expected to be lodged against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. next week.

Duterte Youth chairman Ronald Cardema is expected to file an impeachment complaint against Marcos Jr. after the elections after he failed to have the House receive the ouster documents last week.

“We don’t expect that the House of Representatives will take it seriously because most of the members of the House of Representatives are allies of the President,” Duterte told reporters on the sidelines of a campaign rally here.

“Impeachment is a political exercise, it’s a game of numbers so I don’t expect anything to happen to that impeachment complaint,” she said.

The Vice President refused to comment on the merits of Cardema’s impeachment complaint against Marcos Jr., saying that she has yet to read the articles of impeachment set to be filed against the President.

“Hindi ako makacomment kasi hindi ko alam na may nangyaring ganoon,” she said.

“After the fact na lang ng filing nalaman ko na mayroong impeachment sa kaniya.”

The grounds for impeachment cited in the 24-page complaint was Marcos Jr.’s alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and his alleged betrayal of public trust, “when he allowed the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte on the basis of a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court."

The complainants claimed that Duterte’s right to due process was violated, when the Marcos Jr. administration authorized his arrest on March 11.

Days before Cardema tried to file the first impeachment case against Marcos Jr., the Vice President said that the chief executive should be held liable for her father’s arrest.

Last week, Malacañang said that Cardema has the right to file an impeachment case against the Philippine president, but House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez — the president’s cousin — noted that ouster raps cannot be filed at the moment as Congress is not in session and that the House Secretary General is attending a seminar.
